How to Clean the Washing Machine

How to Clean the Washing Machine

To clean your washing machine you can run a clean-out cycle while the washer is empty. You can also complete the following steps if your washer doesn’t have a specific clean-out cycle:

  1. Prep
Select the whites or hot water cycle.
  2. Add
Fill the bleach dispenser up to the maximum level with Clorox® Bleach or 8 oz (1 cup). If your washer doesn't have a bleach dispenser, manually select the hot water cycle, wait until the water starts running, and add 1 cup (240 ml) of Clorox® Bleach. Continue with the cycle.
  3. Wash with an Extra Rinse
Select a wash cycle with an extra rinse cycle to make sure no bleach remains in the machine. If the washer does not have the option to choose an extra rinse cycle, manually select a rinse cycle when the wash cycle is complete and turn the washer back on.

After selecting a self-clean cycle or washing a load of laundry with bleach, you will be able to wash a normal load. If your washing machine is working properly, you shouldn't see any bleach residue inside the drum, so the loads that follow shouldn't be damaged.
